Safeguarding

Everyone has the right to live a life free of abuse, harm and neglect. This page gives you the resources to identify the signs of abuse and guidance on how to report safeguarding concerns.

What is safeguarding?

Safeguarding is the act of creating a safe environment to protect vulnerable adults and children from harm, abuse or neglect. It is providing a way of safely reporting and acting upon any concerns.

Safeguarding ensures that vulnerable individuals receive the support that they need to live a life without harm.

What is abuse?

Abuse is the violation of a person's civil or human rights by another person. It may be just one incident or a pattern of incidents, physical or non-visible – whatever form it takes, it is never okay.

Abusive behaviours include, but are not limited to:

  • Physical abuse
  • Domestic abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Psychological/ emotional abuse
  • Financial abuse
  • Neglect
  • Modern slavery
  • Child exploitation
  • Coercive control/ 'gaslighting'

How can Watford Community Housing support me?

If you are experiencing abuse in any form, please talk to us. It's important to remember that this isn't your fault and there is absolutely no shame in asking for help.

You can email us at concern@wcht.org.uk and your message will be sent to our safeguarding leads.

We can work with you to explore any necessary home security improvements, offer basic housing advice or temporary accommodation, and signpost to specialist organisations if you are in need of further help.

Please be assured that all information you share with us will be handled with care, and if necessary we will work out a communication plan with you, so we only speak when it’s safe to do so.

We have a number of staff members who are J9 Herts Sunflower Community Champions – this means they have an understanding of domestic abuse, can recognise and respond to victims and they understand how to refer that person to appropriate help and support. Our Leavesden Green Community Hub (Clarke Green, Watford, WD25 0BW) is a 'J9 hub' – the sunflower sticker on the window lets customers and people passing by know that this is a safe space for anyone who needs it.

As a social housing landlord, we recognise the important role we play in keeping our residents safe from harm. If you'd like to find out more about our approach to safeguarding, please have a look at our Safeguarding Children & Adults At Risk Policy.
